Is the ‘5 Bite Diet’ Extreme?
Much controversy is circulating around Dr. Alwin C. Lewis’ ‘5 Bite Diet’. He’s the author of ‘Why Weight Around‘ and creator of the diet that some say is too restrictive.
What’s the diet about?
Basically it’s taking 5 bites per meal:
- 5 bites of anything for lunch
- 5 bites of anything for dinner
- Drink as much as you want as long as it has no calories
- Take a multivitamin
- 1 bite of protein a day
As Dr. Lewis explains, it’s extreme portion control. And the reason it works is that it resets your body’s set point for being full. When you eat less, after a few days, you’ll stop being hungry and be satisfied with less. Dr. Lewis believes that basically American’s eat way too much food.
I agree with Dr. Lewis that we as a nation eat too much food. And he’s right on, if you eat less regularly, in a few days you’ll stop being hungry and adjust to a smaller amount of food to be satisfied.
This may be a good way for you to lose weight, as many of Dr. Lewis’ patients have, as long as what you eat is healthy foods. His restriction on drinking anything as long as it has no calories leaves room for abuse. Some diet sodas have no calories, but certainly you’ll not want to drink that all day, or even a sip. Sodas are full of chemicals and additives, along with high fructose syrup which alone can derail your weight loss efforts.
Can you sustain on this diet?
Sure, again as long as you eat healthy foods. You’ll want to adjust your intake once you reach your optimal weight. On this diet, you’ll probably get their pretty quickly since many lose up to 15 pounds a week.
However, you can lose weight without the extreme portion control by switching your diet to one of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and natural grains. And more importantly, rid your diet of processed and junk foods and drinks.
To your best health!
