A recent poll of gym owners and members shows an increased trend of those visiting the gym to workout in this economy. 84% of those polled said that now is the best time to invest in their health and workout.

The trends also show people are spending less on entertainment and eating out.

Many gym owners are seeing full classes and more members working out than in the past. LifeTime Fitness in particular has seen a rise of 13% in new memberships and an increase in member visits and Town Sports showed club usage up 15%.

These are great trends that we hope will continue.

The results were pretty clear and consistent with other studies and what I’ve been commenting on for many years… red and processed meat kills. The diseases most identified with read and processed meat consumption were cardiovascular disease and cancer.

By comparison, those eating a plant based diet had the least incidents of disease, consistent with previous studies that reported a vegetable based diet was the most heart healthy.

Out of the more than 500,000 followed over a 10 year period, 71,252 died prematurely as a result of excess processed and red meat consumption that resulted in disease and then death.

While the statistics are important, there were other revealing parts of the study most have not reported.

The report also indicated that red meat eaters tended to be married, more likely white, more likely smokers, have higher body mass index, have a higher daily intake of total and saturated fat, had lower activity levels, lower intake of fruits, vegetables and fiber as well as vitamins.

Another interesting aspect of the report was that there was an increased risk associated with death from injuries and sudden death with higher consumption of red meat which I found interesting.

Red meat is red animal meat, and processed meats include sausages, hams, bacon, deli meats, hot dogs, cold cuts, hamburger and many other meats that could also be classified as red meats.

Bottom line is as I’ve always suggested, if you’d like to live longer, have more energy, reduce the risk of most every disease… avoid red and processed meats. Now the statistics confirm the recommendations.

Unfortunately, the study recommends eating a variety of other animal foods which will still kill you, just a little slower. The best diet is a mostly plant based diet that will give you the most energy, prolong your life, reduce risk of most every disease and allow you to attain your optimal weight and health. There have been more studies coming out regularly that caution about the effects of continued cell phone use and the health risks. It’s apparent there is some risk, that many studies questioning anything would cause someone concern. Additionally, common sense tells us that putting a device that emits radiation next to our head for extended lengths of time can’t be healthy.

The research studies show phthalates in 25% of our nation’s mothers and have a greater risk of having a baby son with smaller genitals and incomplete testicular development leading to impaired reproductive development.

Phthalates are found in cosmetics, pvc, hairsprays, nail polish, perfumes, paints, personal care products and in many plastics including those used for re-usable bottles, toys and medical tubes.

The best suggestion to avoid phthalates is to use natural, non-toxic personal care products, phthalate free baby products and avoid most plastic toys as much as possible.

What contributes most to metabolic syndrome?

Diet.

What you eat is the primary influence in your risk of having metabolic syndrome. Studies have shown that the most significant factor is today’s Western Diet of mainly processed foods, soda, meats, fried foods and fast foods. In fact, those eating two or more servings of meat a day (equivalent of 2 burger patties) increase their risk of metabolic syndrome by 25%.

Lack of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, water and natural grains in our diet contributes significantly.

The research has shown that after 9 years of following up with study participants, 40% had three or more of the risk factors for metabolic syndrome. Also, 60.5% of the study participants had metabolic syndrome when they began or developed it during the research period.

The only way to reduce or eliminate your risk of metabolic syndrome is to make simple lifestyle and eating habit changes:

• getting plenty of sunshine daily
• removing animal products from your diet
• removing processed foods from your diet
• staying active daily for at least 30-60 minutes
• maintain a diet rich in fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, especially fresh, organic leafy green vegetables, broccoli and tomatoes
• keep a positive outlook on life
• maintain an attitude of gratitude
• reduce or eliminate the effects of stress in your life

Madame Dimanche or Widow Sunday was a 19th century woman with a 10 inch cornu cutaneum, a horn, on her head. You can see the wax cast of the Madame Dimanche horn and other medical oddities at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia.

Often referred to as a “baby-in-a-bottle freak show” the museum holds over 20,000 items ranging from preserved pathological and anatomical specimens to plaster to wax, papier-mache and plastic models.

Many people today still offer their bodies to the collection. While some do so in an effort to help others who suffer the same condition, many do it because they know that the museum puts a strong focus on the respect for the dead and education.
