			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The world&#8217;s oldest man turned 113 this past week and he&#8217;s still healthy and kicking.</p>
<p>Walter Breuning, of Great Falls, MT, says that the key to his longevity and health has been a combination of two things:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>eating moderately</strong></li>
<li><strong>skipping supper</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>He eats lots of fruit, drinks plenty of water and pushes away from the table when he&#8217;s still hungry. Walter says &#8220;You get in the habit of not eating at night, and you realize how good you feel. If you could just tell people not to eat so darn much.&#8221; He&#8217;s weighed the same for over 35 years.</p>
<p>And even though he does eat dairy foods, meats and occasional desserts, which aren&#8217;t on the healthy side of the menu, this proves that if you eat moderately, earlier in the day (avoid eating at night) and enjoy lots of fruit, it can still bring you a long and healthy life.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve personally shifted my eating times to daylight hours of between 8am and 3pm and this alone has made a significant difference in my health even after being on a <a href="http://www.veganrawdiet.com" target="_blank">raw food diet</a> for over 5 years.</p>

<p>First, here&#8217;s how Dr. Ian sets it up.</p>
<p><span id="more-81"></span>It&#8217;s designed in four phases, each a specified length of time and introduces different foods. The first is basically a detox phase, getting rid of all the toxins and junk you may have accumulated over time.</p>
<p>This phase in my opinion is the best part about this diet. It allows you to eat all the fruits and vegetables you want, no limits, and this rule carries throughout the diet.</p>
<p>Where I feel the diet takes a wrong turn is in the introduction of yogurt, milk, alcohol and lean meats throughout the other 3 phases. Interestingly enough, it&#8217;s mentioned that diets high in meat, dairy (milk and cheese) and processed foods are nutrient poor and the cause of obesity and being overweight. It&#8217;s also mentioned that the milk and beef campaigns, designed to make you believe you need milk and beef to live, are in fact killing us.</p>
<p>But then, in Phase II meats are re-introduced and in Phase III, breads and pastas are introduced again.  And in Phase IV, white rice (probably one of the most nutrition-devoid foods and a bad, refined starch) and alcohol are included.</p>
<p>Now I&#8217;m not sure why a diet would remove these foods and drinks to detox and cleanse you, and then re-introduce them all again? The animal based foods (meats, cheese, milk, yogurt) seem to be introduced for protein. Interestingly enough most Americans already eat a diet overflowing with protein and our true protein requirements are minimal. We can get more protein in a few vegetables, nuts or seeds than we can metabolize in a day. Most of the proteins Americans eat are flushed down the toilet daily in our urine. Animal foods are acidic, contain no fiber and are proven to be the cause of most diseases we die from today.</p>
<p>And the processed starches like breads (even whole wheat) and pastas are all complex carbohydrates that once eaten are converted to sugar and cause an increase increase in blood sugar levels. A diet comprised of processed complex carbohydrates leads to weight gain, obesity, diabetes and other related issues. These are not foods to be re-introduced into a diet once you have cleansed your system.</p>
<p>And alcohol, in any form, are just empty calories, devoid of any nutrition at all.</p>
<p>You see, even with the recommendation to go easy on these foods, as recommended in this diet, requires willpower. Lack of willpower is what causes most of our health problems to begin with. But here&#8217;s the twist. If you don&#8217;t eat these foods, and concentrate on primarily <a href="http://www.veganrawdiet.com" target="_blank">greens, vegetables, fruits, seeds and some nuts</a>, you won&#8217;t have a taste for animal foods or need willpower to avoid them. The &#8216;addiction&#8217; and taste for processed and animal foods will go away and you will naturally seek healthy alternatives. Again, surprisingly this is also mentioned in the diet, but then these same foods are re-introduced.</p>
<p>It appears that many of these foods and drinks are re-introduced into this diet perhaps to appeal to readers that may think they can&#8217;t live without them. Or to make the diet more appealing to a wider audience knowing that you can eat and drink these regular staples in the American diet.</p>
<p>What I like about the Fat Smash Diet:</p>
<ul>
<li>recommends a cleanse or detox to start</li>
<li>recommends eating as many fruits, vegetables, greens and legumes</li>
<li>recognizes that campaigns like &#8220;milk does your body good&#8221; and &#8220;beef, it&#8217;s whats for dinner&#8221; are actually killing us</li>
<li>is more focused on lifestyle changes, not a one time diet</li>
</ul>
<p>What I don&#8217;t like about the Fat Smash Diet:</p>
<ul>
<li>recommends meats</li>
<li>recommends dairy products</li>
<li>recommends alcohol</li>
<li>recommends processed, complex carbs</li>
</ul>
<p>The <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312363133?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=secretcoupons&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0312363133" target="_blank">Fat Smash Diet</a> starts out on the right track. And what Dr. Ian mentions in Phase I, that it&#8217;s <a href="http://www.veganrawdiet.com" target="_blank">impossible to be obese eating as many fruits, vegetables, greens</a> and legumes as you want, is true. In fact, that is the diet that not only brings you to your optimal weight, but also keeps you there as well as avoiding most disease and health issues. If he stuck with that theory throughout the diet, without the re-introduction of the foods that initially cause weight gain, disease and other health issues, then it would be something to recommend completely.</p>
<p>The Fat Smash Diet does work and get results, any diet that suggests a healthy detox or cleanse using fruits, vegetables, and greens will work. It&#8217;s just not the optimal method to lose weight, and more importantly, obtain optimal health.</p>

When three or more of these factors are present, it increases a person&#8217;s risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.</p>
<p>What contributes most to metabolic syndrome?</p>
<p><span id="more-78"></span> Diet.</p>
<p>What you eat is the primary influence in your risk of having metabolic syndrome. Studies have shown that the most significant factor is today&#8217;s Western Diet of mainly processed foods, soda, meats, fried foods and fast foods. In fact, those eating two or more servings of meat a day (equivalent of 2 burger patties) increase their risk of metabolic syndrome by 25%.</p>
<p>Lack of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, water and natural grains in our diet contributes significantly.</p>

Declaring that “the best diet is the one you don’t know you’re on,” he urges small changes in everyday behavior that over the course of a year can result in a weight loss of 10 to 25 pounds. His book will not be much help to people who generally want to lose 50 to 100 pounds.</p>
<p>Enter Brian Wansink. He’s all about little changes that add up over time. He concedes that the body resists big, sudden movements in weight. “It’s estimated that over 95 percent of all people who lose weight on a diet gain it back,” he writes. “Deprivation diets don’t work for three reasons: 1) Our body fights against them; 2) our brain fights against then; and 3) our day-to-day environment fights against them.” Wansink’s recommendations, which are derived from his research on the cues that lead people to overeat, are designed to achieve the loss of up to half a pound a week, which he says is below the threshold that would trigger a metabolic response. He urges readers to use “the mindless margin”—the 100 or 200 calories a day they would not really miss if they gave them up—to gradually move toward the bottom of their weight ranges.</p>
<p>Even if you have no interest in following Wansink’s advice, the book is worth reading for his breezy, entertaining accounts of Candid Camera–ready studies in which people stuff themselves with stale popcorn because it’s in a big container, keep slurping soup from a surreptitiously replenished bowl, or eat more in restaurants because of music, menu language, or the ostensible origin of a complimentary glass of cheap red wine. Wansink’s overarching point is that, when it comes to food, we’re not paying attention. “It takes up to 20 minutes for our body and brain to signal satiation,” he notes, and Americans often finish their meals in less time than that. Instead of internal signals we rely on external cues to tell us when we’re done: Is the plate clean? Is everyone else done? Is there more in the serving dish?</p>
<p>To counteract such cues, Wansink recommends such tactics as using smaller plates (which make portions seem larger), keeping serving dishes in the kitchen (which discourages second helpings), replacing short, wide glasses with tall, thin ones (which make drinks seem bigger), keeping food scraps and bones on your plate (which reminds you how much you’ve eaten), and dividing snacks from big packages into smaller bags or plastic containers (which discourages you from devouring the entire package). Wansink, who wants readers to know that he “enjoys both French food and French fries each week,” advocates eating more mindfully, to increase enjoyment as well as to improve nutrition. But he thinks it’s unrealistic to expect people to constantly count their calories in the face of the myriad food-related decisions they make each day. In his view it pays to plan ahead, in effect tricking yourself into eating less.</p>
<p>Wansink, for his part, says labeling and education don’t make much of a difference, and “we cannot legislate or tax people into eating Brussels sprouts.” Although he has spent much of his career studying ways in which businesses encourage people to buy, he recognizes the limitations of these techniques and does not portray them as inherently sinister. “Do food companies put ingredients in their food that they know we will eat and love?” he writes. “Absolutely—they are guilty as charged. So is your grandmother.” Wansink emphasizes consumer self-help rather than protection from conniving capitalists. A chapter called “The Hidden Persuaders Around Us,” a phrase that echoes the title of the 1957 Vance Packard book that portrayed advertisers as insidious manipulators of desire, is mostly about tricks people can use to avoid eating mindlessly. Instead of remaking the world to discourage overeating, Wansink says, “we can reengineer our personal food environment to help us and our families eat better.”</p>

<p>Constipation is not a disease. It is rather a symptom to a disease in the digestive system. However, most of the time, this isn’t a serious problem. It is usually cause by poor dietary or food intake that helps in the easy digestion process.</p>
<p>Know If You Are Constipated</p>
<p>As written above, to most people bowel movement is regular part of everyday. When you are having difficulty in moving or the daily routine becomes fewer in week. When you have constipation, your stools are usually hard, dry, and small in size but are difficult to eliminate. It seems that you are about to move but you just can not move those stools out. Many people find this condition painful because of staining, bloating and cuts in the anus.</p>
<p>Constipation do not exclude any age. Almost all people from a baby to an adult experience such difficulty once in their lives. However, this feeling of unease can be prevented and treated for immediate and longer relief.</p>
<p>Causes of Constipation</p>
<p>The causes of constipation begin from the food we choose to eat to the digestion to the elimination. The food we eat contains substances that are difficult for the stomach to digest and for the digestive fluids to break down. Understanding how the large intestine works in the digestion also helps. From the stomach, undigested food and food contents will be transported to the colon where the water is absorbed and the stools and waste products are formed. That is the reason why the stool is almost dry and solid when it reaches the rectum because the water is already absorbed. The peristalsis movement or muscle contractions in the colon push the waste products to rectum. That is the time you feel like eliminating something from inside the body.</p>
<p>Constipation occurs when the colon functions abnormally or improperly. There are times that the colon absorbs too much water that makes the waste products so dry. Because of lack of physical activity, the colon sometimes contracts too slow that makes the stool stays more time in it and becomes hard.</p>
<p><strong>The common cause of constipation is a lack of fiber in the diet.</strong> These fibers help in the digestion by acting as sweepers of fats in the food. They also make the food easier to breakdown. When a person lacks exercise or other physical activity especially for people with old age, this also causes constipation. The body parts seem to be all resting, which makes the process of digestion more difficult for the stomach. Medications and abuse of laxatives could also affect food processing. Furthermore, lack of water intake or dehydration also causes constipation.</p>
