No Dinner Key To Longevity According To World’s Oldest Man

The world’s oldest man turned 113 this past week and he’s still healthy and kicking.

Walter Breuning, of Great Falls, MT, says that the key to his longevity and health has been a combination of two things:

  • eating moderately
  • skipping supper

He eats lots of fruit, drinks plenty of water and pushes away from the table when he’s still hungry. Walter says “You get in the habit of not eating at night, and you realize how good you feel. If you could just tell people not to eat so darn much.” He’s weighed the same for over 35 years.

And even though he does eat dairy foods, meats and occasional desserts, which aren’t on the healthy side of the menu, this proves that if you eat moderately, earlier in the day (avoid eating at night) and enjoy lots of fruit, it can still bring you a long and healthy life.

I’ve personally shifted my eating times to daylight hours of between 8am and 3pm and this alone has made a significant difference in my health even after being on a raw food diet for over 5 years.

Enjoy and to your best health!

What About The Calorie Restriction Diet Plan?

The calorie restriction diet plan is not new and basically involves reducing the amount of calories one eats to lose weight.

It’s one of the most straightforward plans since the reason most people gain weight is that they eat more calories than they burn. So restricting calories and increasing activity will help in weight loss.

But it’s also important to remember that the type of foods eaten are also vital to the success of any healthy living lifestyle.

Along with restricting calories, it’s important to focus your diet on high nutrient dense, fresh and locally or organically grown produce, primarily fruits and vegetables. Eating these will increase cleansing of the body riding it of toxins and at the same time, release extra fat. They are also fiber rich and full of living enzymes vital to proper digestion and assimilation of nutrients. Processed and cooked foods lake these living enzymes and clog up your system instead.

Good Recession Health News

There is good news amidst the gloom and doom recession news in our economy today.

A recent poll of gym owners and members shows an increased trend of those visiting the gym to workout in this economy. 84% of those polled said that now is the best time to invest in their health and workout.

The trends also show people are spending less on entertainment and eating out.

Many gym owners are seeing full classes and more members working out than in the past. LifeTime Fitness in particular has seen a rise of 13% in new memberships and an increase in member visits and Town Sports showed club usage up 15%.

These are great trends that we hope will continue.

Study: Red and Processed Meat Kills

The largest study to date, including over 500,000 subjects over a 10 year period, about the relationship between eating red and processed meat and longevity now reports that there is about a 30% greater risk of dying prematurely.

The results were pretty clear and consistent with other studies and what I’ve been commenting on for many years… red and processed meat kills. The diseases most identified with read and processed meat consumption were cardiovascular disease and cancer.

By comparison, those eating a plant based diet had the least incidents of disease, consistent with previous studies that reported a vegetable based diet was the most heart healthy.

Out of the more than 500,000 followed over a 10 year period, 71,252 died prematurely as a result of excess processed and red meat consumption that resulted in disease and then death.

While the statistics are important, there were other revealing parts of the study most have not reported.

The report also indicated that red meat eaters tended to be married, more likely white, more likely smokers, have higher body mass index, have a higher daily intake of total and saturated fat, had lower activity levels, lower intake of fruits, vegetables and fiber as well as vitamins.

Another interesting aspect of the report was that there was an increased risk associated with death from injuries and sudden death with higher consumption of red meat which I found interesting.

Red meat is red animal meat, and processed meats include sausages, hams, bacon, deli meats, hot dogs, cold cuts, hamburger and many other meats that could also be classified as red meats.

Bottom line is as I’ve always suggested, if you’d like to live longer, have more energy, reduce the risk of most every disease… avoid red and processed meats. Now the statistics confirm the recommendations.

Unfortunately, the study recommends eating a variety of other animal foods which will still kill you, just a little slower. The best diet is a mostly plant based diet that will give you the most energy, prolong your life, reduce risk of most every disease and allow you to attain your optimal weight and health. Engine 2 Diet

Firefighter Rip Esselstyn noticed many of his fellow firefighters in Austin, TX needed dire help with their health. Many were overweight with high levels of cholesterol.

Previously a professional triathlete, Rip put his knowledge about health to work and helped them lose weight and lower their cholesterol. Every one of them lost weight with his help.

In his well reviewed book, Engine 2 Diet, he outlines how a plant based whole foods diet is the key to better health and weight loss. I no doubt believe that Rip’s father, internationally renouned cardiologist and author Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, formerly of the famous Cleveland Clinic and a proponent of plant based diet for heart health, was a large influence. Dr. Esselstyn recommends a vegan diet to become ‘heart attack’ proof.

The book includes an excellent selection of low fat plant based recipes along with his plan for a healthy way to lose weight and live.

Here are some actual comments from readers:

“I have been eating the Engine 2 diet for five months. I’ve lost 35 LBS. My cholesterol dropped over 60 points. This was all after a meeting with a doctor who told me my cholesterol would only be slightly lowered by changing my diet. ”

“I love many things about Engine 2. It gives people excellent goals for better health and explains in detail how to achieve those goals. I found the chapter on reading labels extremely helpful, especially the specific criteria for the grocery store aisles. The large recipe section includes many simple everyday dishes and few elaborate dishes. It offers replacements for animal-sourced high-fat workhorses like mayonnaise, salad dressing, and sandwich fillings. The book’s strength is showing how to live this lifestyle every working day. ”
